My wife and me enjoying our first beers in Belgium at a cafe next to a Bruges canal.

My name is Don Ayres, and I am The AlcoTourist. I’m actually AN AlcoTourist…I’d hardly be arrogant enough to think that I’m the only one, but I own the domain name, so suck it! I’ve always been a huge fan of travel, and one of the best ways to experience your destination is by drinking and eating like a local. Local breweries, wineries, distilleries and restaurants know their customers best, so who better to trust when you want to fully experience your destination.

After an 11-year career in talk radio, I embarked on a second career covering the exciting San Diego craft beer scene. With well over 100 local breweries, San Diego’s industry is constantly evolving, and there always seems to be something new to taste and talk about. I’ve since expanded beyond “America’s Finest City,” and started writing for publications with a more national audience like Paste Magazine and Alaska Airlines Magazine.

This page is the home for my coverage of the local craft beer industry in San Diego as well as profiles of places I’ve visited with drinking and eating suggestions along the way. I’ll even include new beer reviews, drink and food recipes and other fun stuff like lists in convenient NON-SLIDESHOW FORMAT (sorry…pet peeve of mine, a 20-slide show for a list of five items, I can’t even…SERENITY NOW)! If there’s anything you’d like to see, don’t be afraid to shoot me an email at TheAlcoTourist@gmail.com. Also, follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
